The city of New Westminster is situated east of the City of Burnaby. The defining boundary, the Fraser River, runs along the south. To the north and east is the municipality of Coquitlam.

The major visitor attraction in New West is New Westminster Quay home to the new Westminster Public Market , a major hotel and a docked riverboat casino.

The major claim to fame with respect to New Westminster is that it was the capital of British Columbia before Victoria on Vancouver Island became the seat of provincial government. As a result New Westminster has many heritage structures dating from this period because of its importance at the time administratively, socially and economically.
